Nelson’s low vacancy rate and high rental costs make finding and keeping housing a challenge especially for those living on low incomes and coping with multiple other challenges. HPP focuses on preventing homelessness in four priority groups in our population who have been identified as particularly vulnerable to homelessness:
- Women (and their children) who have experienced relationship violence or are at-risk
- Youth, including those leaving the formal care system
- Adults leaving institutional care (e.g. hospital, corrections, treatment centre)
- People of Aboriginal descent
The primary goal is to provide wrap-around services that specifically prevent homelessness by offering such supports as rental supplements, life skills support, case planning and integrated case management, and landlord relationship building, to name a few.
