Sexual Assault Services | Nelson & Nakusp


Our Services & Approach:

The Sexual Assault Services team provides sensitive and comprehensive health care and support to anyone 13+ who has been sexually assaulted within the past 7 days. Our specially trained nurses and doctors will respond to your health care needs in a safe and supportive environment. All services are free, confidential and inclusive.


HOW TO ACCESS:

NELSON: To access our program, 24/7 & 7 days a week, in Nelson go to: Kootenay Lake Hospital Emergency Department, 3 View Street.
NAKUSP: To access our program 24/7 & 7 days a week, in Nakusp go to: Arrow Lakes Hospital Emergency Department,  97 1 Ave NE.
ANTI-VIOLENCE LINE: OR connect with a local support worker 24/7 by calling our Anti-Violence Line to find out more about our services and your options, call 1-250-354-4357.

We will explain what we can offer and answer any questions you might have. You will decide what you would like us to do and we will respect your decisions. You do not need to involve the police unless you wish to do so. There are several reporting options available to you that we can help explain. 

24/7 Anti-Violence Line:

Survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, ages 13+, and their supports, can reach out to us 24/7 to receive:

  • Emotional Support.
  • Information about sexual and physical assault, medical and forensic procedures, reporting options, and legal options.
  • Information and referrals to other community supports and services.
  • Information on follow-up counselling and justice.

Crisis Counselling:

Survivors can access Crisis Counselling if the assault was in the last 6 months or if there have been new developments in the area of reporting or a criminal case. Email Cheryl at csmith@servicesfyi.ca or call (250) 509-1247.

Education & Awareness:

SAS is dedicated to prevention through education and raising awareness. Our staff is available to present to various agencies, schools and groups on a variety of topics pertaining to sexual assault including consent and receiving disclosures. Nelson Street Outreach

NELSON STREET OUTREACH PROGRAM

This program began in October 2016 as a way to provide a caring, comprehensive, and direct response to the immediate and longer-term needs of Nelson’s growing ‘street culture’ population. Services are offered throughout the year from Monday to Friday during daytime hours. To reach the team please call 250-777-3993.

To  mark 50 years of service to families, youth & individuals in the community, we’ve launched a series of short films. Two films were prepared to spotlight the Street out reach program:

OUR PHILOSOPHY

We believe that all individuals who rely on a community’s ‘street culture’ to live and/or survive are valued community members and have the right to receive support and access stabilization services in a manner that respects their dignity, their strengths, and their right to choose.

OUR TEAM & OUR TRAINING

Ryall and Jeremy

Our team is made up of three street outreach workers, and a program director.

Our training includes Mental Health First Aid, Basic First Aid/CPR, Assessment, Case Management, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, Privacy/Info sharing, Drug Information, Naloxone, Mental Health and Substance Use, Health Precautions & Personal Safety

OUR MISSION

Our Mission is two-fold:

  1. To work in collaboration with relevant service providers to identify members of Nelson’s ‘street culture’ population, assess their immediate and long-term needs for health, safety, and basic needs, and offer a range of supports and services designed to meet these needs.
  2. To support downtown business owners and the general public in their increased understanding, tolerance, and acceptance of the challenges of the ‘street culture’ population and to foster a culture of mutual respect.

 

 

OUR SERVICES

Through a trauma-informed, health promotion, harm reduction, social inclusion, and education lens, we offer:

  • Support & advocacy
  • Information & referrals Crisis intervention
  • Accompaniment
  • Inclusion activities
  • Public education

This program currently relies solely on grants and donations from our community.

    Lyann joined NCS in 2020. She has a diploma in Social Services and currently working on her social work degree.

    Jeremy has been with NCS since 2016. Background in community support work.

    Ryall has been with NCS since 2016. Master of Arts in Environmental Education and Communication, Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy
